Now the eye exam can be made without eye drops which dilate the pupils, so one can read or drive afterwards. Another good thing is that the resulting pictures are stored, so it is possible to track the changes over the years.

And the pictures are pretty cool and resemble some of pictures obtained from space telescopes, which is not so surprising, since the same methods of adaptive optics are used:

We went to the top of Mount Eisenhower. As you see, some gray jays there were brave enough to eat from a human hand. It felt great too -- I had 4 peanuts on my palm, a jay landed, ate one of them, got another one and flew away, then came back for the other two. Three jays followed us for quite a while on our way up. We spent some of the next day on the shore of the Saco River at the Attitash ski resort, not very far from the place where we stayed.

More 10th ICCNS findings: Razvan Florian (Romania) presented a poster, "Reinforcement learning for spiking neural networks with modulated spike-timing-dependent plasticity". Basically, this modifies the reinforcement learning approach by Jonathan Baxter and Peter Bartlett for the situation with spikes. (One nice thing is that training for XOR works successfully in this case. I had difficulties with making the classical Baxter-Bartlett setup to work for XOR, either because of some principal problems, or because my hands grow from the wrong places.) His papers are here:
