PS. An "Op-Ed" by Jennifer Allen in NYTimes:

The Bones of Summer

I liked it, except for the moralistic ending. I suppose this does not say anything good about my literary taste...

The article is quite repulsive. If journalists are paid for THIS, then I regret paying $5 for NY Times - I don't want anything to do with it.

"Article"? I think it's a strange fiction, pretending to be non-fiction a bit, to be called an "op-ed"... very American too...

> then I regret paying $5 for NY Times

paying $5 for NY Times??? sounds weird...

anyway, I mentioned that this probably does not say anything good about my literary taste ;-) but why *exactly* do you find it repulsive?

yeah, op-ed. Junk that no one is responsible for, but is a part of the newspaper anyway.

paying $5 for NY Times - Sunday edition, at a news stand at Chicago airport, before getting on the plane.

this probably does not say anything good about my literary taste - hey, you seem to like some of my poems, so not all is lost ;-) :-)))))

why *exactly* do you find it repulsive? - I guess the answer is "that's just how I feel". But to be totally boring:
1. it's about some random events that really don't have much connection or meaning, but she tries to present them as if they do.
2. it's kinda sadistic.

You should regret this regardless ;-)

> it's kinda sadistic.

I thought it's kinda sentimental... And it made me long for that life...

Anyway, as I commented elsewhere, it had sufficient synchronicity value.

And it made me long for that life... - oh, you want some broken bones? This can be arranged. Hopefully you will learn some profound truths and reach a new level of maturity. Or at least get fed up with stupid junk in NY Times op-eds.

I thought you were going to do some math...

Broken bones are merely incidental to that lifestyle. And "longing for it" does not mean that I really want it. It's just a whimsy :-)

> Or at least get fed up with stupid junk in NY Times op-eds

with stupid junk in NY Times and other newspapers ;-)

it's just an unhealthy addiction: one is fed up, but still takes it, and takes it... even to the tune of paying $5 bucks for it, instead of enjoying the flight ;-)

> I thought you were going to do some math...

I am actually trying. I still have not told those New York people the title of my talk :-( Grrrrr...

OT: What do you think about Альтист Данилов?

Broken bones are merely incidental to that lifestyle. - Thta's not what the article (or the piece of art, or whatever) sounded like :-)

even to the tune of paying $5 bucks for it, instead of enjoying the flight - now, I enjoyed the flight, too. But after being out of the country for some time I wanted to catch up on stuff. Actually, read a couple of interesting articles in the little magazine that came with it.

I still have not told those New York people the title of my talk - tell me when you figure it out, too.

What do you think about Альтист Данилов? - it's quite good. Apparently, he wrote it when his wife was in the hospital for a long time. He would bring her a chapter every day, or something like this. Has all their friends in it (I don't know how much he edited it later to make people less recognizable, or maybe he didn't care). Just don't read his other books, I tried, and it was quite a painful experience. Hope this helps :-)

Ушастый Зверь теперь сменил милость на гнев, и говорит, что только самое начало "Альтиста" хорошее :-) Наверное, инвариант состоит в том, чтобы ваши оценки не совпадали в любой данный момент времени :-)

commenting on the synchronicity items a bit more:

1) a photoshop play with a railroad ticket (including "ponaehali tut" --- the well known expression of disdain for people who come to Moscow and stay there).

2) "perhaps I should through away the ticket and stay in this city forever"

3) the NY Times piece starts with "a rusty-nailed railroad tie" (which is instrumental for breaking the bones), and Los Angeles was the last place I visited ;-) I also suffer from a strange sports trauma sustained about a month ago ;-)
