What happens when a guy refuses to accept his Fields medal? The press does not even mention the names of other Fields winners, as if the refusal is the news, and not the achievement. The most one gets from Washington Post is "three other mathematicians -- another Russian, a Frenchman and an Australian -- also won Fields honors this year".

The people, who received their Fields medals, are Andrei Okounkov, Terence Tao, and Wendelin Werner.

I think he is very strange person. But it's an old story, how the ability to think "outside the envelope" in science correlates with the "outside the envelope" behavior in life..

Even Feynman discussed with a journalist whether he can get away from the hassles associated with the Nobel prize thing, but they quickly figured out that the refusal would create an even larger noise and inconvenience..

I think that there is no doubt that Perlman is an unusual person. However I would be curious to know his reasons, whether it was to just to avoid an inconvenience or of he has some principles not allowing him to accept.

This is all starting to look more and more like a soap opera. In addition to this, there are now 3 separate teams who had completed details of Perelman's argument, so in theory they can pretend on (part of) Clay prize; one of the teams is supported by Yau, and the other includes Tian (two mathematicians competing for the unofficial position of "chief Chinese mathematician").

I wish we could convince the press to move this story to gossip pages, where it belongs, and in the main article talk about the importance and beauty of mathematics, not about soap opera stuff...

It is actually surprisingly unprofessional of WP not to mention the names of the other winners. NYT, for example, published photographs of all of them.

да.. совсем человек живёт в своей реальности..

но я, как раз, про это уже столько слышал, что.. мне хотелось бы, чтобы более подробно рассказали про других ребят и их работы..

в итоге поведение Перельмана имеет тот эффект, что, наоборот, всё внимание обращено на него.. я не думаю, что он этого сознательно хочет, хотя всё может быть..

В человеческом есть, в смысле разнообразия в популяции..

Но в его поведении, как раз, нет -- все ожидали, что он откажется :-) Вот если бы он согласился, это был бы триумф непредсказуемости :-)
